The wreck at the 1960 Daytona Modified Sportsman Race remains, to this day, the largest in all of NASCAR history. There were 68 cars on the track and 37 of them piled up in one giant accident. Miraculously, no one was injured, but that entire year served as a lesson in safety for NASCAR.
Two separate pileups occurred in the first of two different 125-mile qualifying races, five drivers were seriously injured, popular drivers Johnny Beauchamp and Lee Petty suffered career-ending injuries after wrecking in the second qualifier, and multiple other car crashes resulted in some major changes in NASCAR. For starters, the quantity of drivers allowed on the track at one time was greatly reduced from 68 to 43.
